Beni Madonna is a premium Japanese citrus fruit known for its jelly-like texture and rich sweetness. Developed in Ehime Prefecture, it is considered one of the most luxurious citrus varieties in Japan.
Overview

- Japanese name: Beni Madonna
- Type: Tangor (orange × mandarin hybrid)
- Taste: Very sweet with mild acidity
- Seeds: Usually seedless
- Peel: Thin but not easy to peel
Beni Madonna was developed from Amakusa and Nanko citrus parentage, inheriting the high sweetness and rich flavor of Amakusa while improving texture and harvest timing.
Why Beni Madonna Is Special
One reason Beni Madonna became highly valued in Japan is its harvest timing.
While Amakusa is mainly harvested from late January, Beni Madonna can be harvested from early December. This allows the fruit to enter Japan’s important year-end gift season, when premium fruit is commonly purchased as winter gifts.
Beni Madonna is cultivated only in Ehime Prefecture. The original breeding name of the variety is Ehime Kashi No. 28, and it is sometimes also called Aika or Aika 28.
Only fruit that passes strict quality standards for appearance, size, sweetness, and acidity can be sold under the Beni Madonna brand name.
Beni Madonna is considered one of the symbolic premium citrus varieties of modern Ehime citrus breeding.
Flavor Profile

Beni Madonna is famous for its smooth, jelly-like flesh that almost melts in the mouth. It has a rich sweetness balanced with gentle acidity and a strong citrus aroma.
